Saturday, March 31, at 3:14 p.m.,
Santa Monica police officers responded to the 100 block of Idaho Avenue regarding a report of a pregnant woman who was being assaulted and pepper sprayed by her sister-in-law. When officers arrived, they detained the sister-in-law and made contact with the victim, who was five months pregnant at the time. She told officers that she was waiting to use the elevator at her apartment complex, where her sister-in-law also lives, when the suspect arrived and began verbally assaulting her. The victim said that when she tried to get on the elevator, the sister-in-law pulled her hair and punched her in the face. She then took pepper spray from the victim and used it on her. The victim said she fell to the ground and the suspect started kicking her in the backside and stomach several times. The suspect then allegedly took the victim’s cell phone and a bag containing shoes and tried to drive off. A witness provided assistance to the victim and called 911. Officers caught up with the suspect and searched her car and recovered the cell phone and shoes. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment and the suspect was placed under arrest for robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and assault with a caustic chemical. She was identified as Jasmine Shodja, 43, of Santa Monica. Her bail was set at $50,000.

Officers responded to the 1200 block of Fourth Street — Milken Family Foundation — regarding a report of a burglary that had just occurred. Armed with a description of the suspect, officers en route spotted a man matching that description walking westbound on Arizona Avenue. When officers rolled up, the suspect allegedly took off running. Officers gave chase and apprehended the suspect as he was trying to hide in Parking Structure 1. Other officers made contact with a security guard at the foundation who told them that the suspect jumped over a locked fence and forced his way into a conference room. Security camera footage showed the suspect travel by elevator to another floor and then exit the building in a hurry. Officers did not recover any stolen property at the time of the arrest. The suspect was ultimately booked for burglary and resisting arrest. He was identified as Jordan Scales, 18, of Santa Monica. His bail was set at $20,000.
Saturday, March 31, at 6:53 p.m.,
Officers were on routine patrol on the 2500 block of Lincoln Boulevard when they saw a man riding his bike on the sidewalk in violation of the municipal code. Officers made contact with the suspect at the corner of Lincoln and Pine Street and learned that he was on parole. Officers searched the suspect and allegedly recovered a glass pipe commonly used to smoke methamphetamine, along with several empty Ziploc baggies. The suspect was placed under arrest and booked for possession of drug paraphernalia. He was identified as Chaka Marshall, 47, of Los Angeles. His bail was set at $500.
Monday, March 26, at 2:40 p.m.,
A 17-year-old girl who attends Santa Monica High School went to the Public Safety Facility to file a report about being the victim of an assault while on campus. The girl told officers that she was waiting in line for lunch when she and her friends were approached by six girls who started arguing with them. One of the girls pushed the victim and the two started fighting, police said. During the fight five additional suspects jumped in and started hitting the victim and her friends. The victim said while she was on the ground, the girl she was fighting with kicked her and stomped on her face several times. The fight was eventually broken up. Officers interviewed those involved and arrested a student on March 28. She was identified as Jeanette Nieto, 18, of Santa Monica. She was booked for assault with a deadly weapon and her bail was set at $30,000. The incident is still under investigation and additional arrests may be made, police said.
Wednesday, March 28, at 4:02 p.m.,
Officers responded to the 1700 block of Ocean Avenue — Loews Hotel — regarding a report of a burglary that just occurred. When officers arrived, they made contact with hotel security who said they had detained a man after they found him in a guest room that was not registered to him. They told officers that they entered a guest room and found that the mini bar had been emptied and the room was a mess. The suspect was sitting on a balcony and allegedly tried to jump when security arrived. A fight between security and the suspect ensued. One of the guards was allegedly punched in the face before they were able to detain the suspect. Police placed the suspect under arrest for burglary, a probation violation and battery. The loss to Loews was estimated at $550. The suspect was identified as Marc Zell, 33, a transient. No bail was set.
