On February 12, at approximately 3:30 p.m.
Officers responded to the Vons Supermarket (710 Broadway Avenue) regarding a malicious mischief call for service. The details of the call indicated a man was throwing beer and food inside the store and was threatening to “chop-up” employees.
Officers arrived on scene and observed a man who matched the description of the subject involved in this incident walking westbound near 7th and Broadway. Officers, who were in front of the subject, attempted to detain the suspect by asking him to stop. The subject refused to comply with the officers commands to stop and he continued to walk directly at the officers. The subject, later identified as Cesar Sanchez, started to aggressively shuffle towards the officers with his hands in his waistband.
Officers spoke to Sanchez and convinced him to sit down; however, he continued to verbally interrupt the officers.
Officers learned that a victim of an assault wanted to press charges against Sanchez. The officers attempted to placed Sanchez under arrest; however, he violently resisted and was ultimately placed in handcuffs and arrested for assault and resisting arrest.
Cesar Sanchez, 39, homeless, was held on $20,000 bail.
