An international art fair that highlights emerging artists is returning this week to Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar for the second time.
More than 140 artists will showcase and sell their works Thursday through Sunday at The Other Art Fair, which since 2011 has exhibited more than 3,000 artists from around the world at fairs in the United Kingdom, United States and Australia. This is the third time the fair has been held in Los Angeles.
“Barker Hangar is one of our bigger venues, which means we can have some really interesting content, more artists and flesh out a more interactive event,” said founder Ryan Stanier.
The fair will feature creative workshops, art installations and local food vendors, Stanier said, as well as a children’s activities area and a central bar. Local gallery Saatchi Art will provide tours through the fair.
Visitors can purchase $5 tickets to workshops such as perfumery, storytelling with Instagram and sandal-making.
“The idea is that the workshops give visitors a creative experience within the fair,” Stanier said.
Two workshops will explore how to create a digital brand through Instagram and YouTube.
“Instagram is such an important tool for unrepresented artists to get their work shown and seen,” he said. “I think our audience would be interested in learning how to leverage it to raise your profile.”
Several artists are debuting installations at Barker Hangar.
UK artist duo The Connor Brothers will exhibit a new body of work called ‘This Is England,’ a series of portraits celebrating young activists working towards a greener, more equitable future.
‘One Small Step’ brings together 10 artists to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing through the transformation of astronaut helmets into works of art.
All proceeds from the auction of the helmets will support Mines Advisory Group, whose mission is to clear the earth of landmines and bombs in conflict zones.
Artist Dan Hillier will be showing ‘The Earth Cube, ’ an immersive installation for fair attendees, and two new large figurative works based on natural archetypes, alongside other objects and items for sale.
“(Hillier) has created this installation where people remove themselves from the hustle and bustle of the fair and have a peaceful, immersive experience,” Stanier said.
The fair will debut with a private view Thursday evening and open Friday afternoon and all day Saturday and Sunday.
Online tickets cost $15 for adults and $13.50 for students and seniors. Tickets at the door cost $18 and $15.
