CLARE MATRIX Treatment Center in partnership with Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District and the Westside Impact Project, will host a virtual event for parents. Weeks of quarantine with school age children who need guidance from parents to continue their school work is causing a tremendous amount of stress, which can lead to unhealthy ways to relieve the anxiety.
On May 9, mental health, clinical and prevention professionals from CLARE MATRIX and Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District will hold a special presentation online, to offer coping skills. Topics include:
· Household Stressors and Coping
· Substance Use Risk
· Effective Communication Skills
Stress during an outbreak can cause various physical and mental health problems, including increased risk of drugs and/or alcohol misuse. A panel of experts will help parents discuss subjects that can lead to uncomfortable conversations with children.
Panel:
· Shuli Lotan, LCSW, Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Mental Health Counseling Coordinator
· Kimberly Lowe, LMFT, CLARE|MATRIX Clinical Supervisor
· Kimia Kabir, AMFT, CLARE|MATRIX, Prevention Specialist
· Peter Bippus, AMFT, APCC, CLARE|MATRIX, Prevention Specialist
“As the world is undergoing some tragic and difficult times, the concern for substance use increase is on the rise. CLARE is hosting a panel to keep parents informed about some ways to effectively cope with the pandemic alongside tools to keep parents informed on how to talk to their kids about substance use. We want to be a vital resource for parents and community members during this time, and we hope that in providing efforts virtually, we can continue to create positive change”. – Tiffany Tran, Prevention Manager at CLARE|MATRIX
Questions are welcome. The goal is to provide parents with a toolkit on how to handle the “new normal.”
