The world's only solar-powered Ferris wheel will transform into a 90-foot-tall animated American flag as Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier celebrates Independence Day with a weeklong patriotic light show.

The Pacific Wheel will glow red, white and blue through Sunday, July 6, joining other Southern California landmarks in tribute to the holiday. The light display will run from sunset (approximately 8:09 p.m.) to 12:30 a.m. each night.

The nine-story Ferris wheel features 174,000 LED lights mounted on 40 spokes and two hubs, capable of producing 16.7 million color combinations for dynamic, computer-generated lighting entertainment. The eco-friendly LED system provides 81 percent greater energy savings compared to traditional incandescent bulbs used on most Ferris wheels.

Located at 380 Santa Monica Pier, the Pacific Wheel lifts riders more than 130 feet above the Pacific Ocean, offering panoramic views of the Southern California coastline from the internationally popular pier.

Independence Day commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, when the Continental Congress declared that the 13 American colonies were no longer subject to British rule and had become united, free and independent states. The holiday is traditionally celebrated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, beach picnics and civic ceremonies.

Pacific Park is Los Angeles' only admission-free amusement park, featuring 12 rides, 14 midway games, five food vendors in Snackville and seaside retail shopping. The park's prices and operating hours are subject to change.
