Santa Monica College's Theatre Arts Department will present "Seussical TYA (Theatre for Young Audiences)" July 25-Aug. 3 at the Theatre Arts Main Stage on the SMC Main Campus, 1900 Pico Blvd.

The 75-minute musical adventure through the Jungle of Nool follows Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent to military school for thinking too many "thinks." Horton faces a double challenge protecting the Whos from naysayers and dangers while guarding an egg left by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird.

Throughout the story, Horton encounters ridicule, danger, kidnapping and even a trial, but the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. The production explores themes of friendship, loyalty, family and community that ultimately triumph over adversity.

The musical features music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens. The book is by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, co-conceived by Lynn Ahrens, Stephen Flaherty and Eric Idle. Based on the works of Dr. Seuss, "Seussical for Young Audiences" premiered at The Coterie Theatre in Kansas City, Missouri, under artistic director Jeff Church.

The SMC production is directed by Terrin Adair with music direction by Gary Fritzen.
