The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a motion Tuesday to proclaim Nov. 16 "LA County Remembrance Day for Road Traffic Victims."

The motion, authored by Chair Pro Tem and First District Supervisor Hilda L. Solis and Third District Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath, aims to raise awareness about road safety and honor road traffic victims as the holiday season approaches.

According to the California Highway Patrol, 18,708 collisions occurred in unincorporated areas of the county in 2024, with 125 fatal crashes. Of those fatalities, 37 involved pedestrians, 17 involved motorcyclists and two involved bicyclists.

"Today's proclamation not only holds space for those we've lost but also serves as a reminder to always take precautions, remain vigilant and make safe decisions during the holiday season," Solis said.

"This day reminds us that behind every crash is a person who had dreams for their future, people who loved them and a community left grieving," Horvath said. "In Los Angeles County, we are honoring their memory by committing to safer streets, stronger education and better awareness for everyone on the road."

The approved motion highlights the county's Vision Zero initiative, led by the Department of Public Health's PLACE program in partnership with the Sheriff's Department and other agencies. The initiative will raise awareness of road safety, highlight dangers of street takeovers and install billboards during the holidays to promote public education on roadway safety.
