A new coffee shop known for sustainable coffee is opening in Ocean Park’s historic Edgemar building.
Blue Bottle, a chain with about 70 locations across the United States and Japan, is opening its first location in Santa Monica Sunday at 2439 Main St, replacing the Peet's Coffee that previously occupied the location.
The cafe is several blocks away from Main Street’s other specialty coffee shops, such as Groundwork, Espresso Cielo and Bulletproof Coffee. The company expects to draw customers from nearby offices, residential neighborhoods and the beach, a spokesperson said.
Anthony Schmitt, chair of the Main Street Business Improvement Association, said the district has enough patrons to support a variety of coffee shops.
“There are so many places to wake up on Main Street,” he said.
Blue Bottle was founded in Oakland in 2002 and has been expanding rapidly in the past several years. The cafes are known for their minimalist, sky-blue accented design.
A spokesperson said the design of the chain’s Edgemar location was inspired by the building’s iconic mint green tiles and includes displays of vintage Edgemar Farms Milk bottles, a dairy farm that occupied the building in the 1940s.
“The interior looks spectacular and I think people are going to appreciate the new sense of space,” Schmitt said. “We’re thrilled to have them open and bring some life to the courtyard at Edgemar.”
