The Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) has arrested a suspect in connection with several arsons in Downtown.
According to SMDP, Jonathan Powell, a 28-year-old homeless man was arrested on Nov. 28.
Officers were initially called to the area in the early morning hours on Sunday for reports of dumpster and trashcan fires. At about 3:45 a.m., they located a suspected who tried to run but was caught on the 400 block of Arizona. Powell was identified as a suspect in one fire and is believed to be responsible for at least five others.
During a search of Powell’s person, officers located several lighters in his front pants pocket. Powell was taken into custody and booked for Arson and Delaying Arrest.
