Because of the recent rainfall, Los Angeles County Health Officer, Dr. Muntu Davis issued a health advisory for local beaches. Water runoff with bacteria, chemicals, debris, trash, and other public health hazards from city streets and mountain areas will likely to contaminate ocean waters at and around discharging storm drains, creeks, and rivers after a rainfall. Individuals who enter the water in these areas could become ill.
This advisory will be in effect until at least Thursday, October 28 at 1 p.m. and may be extended depending on further rainfall.
The National Weather Service also issued a high surf warning.
Large breaking waves of 6 to 10 feet with dangerous rip currents are predicted for the Los Angeles County Coast and Catalina and Santa Barbara Islands through 3 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 27. There is an increased risk for ocean drowning. Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea. Large breaking waves can cause injury, wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats near shore.
