The Los Angeles District Attorney is now investigating an allegation of animal cruelty against a Santa Monica man who was filmed beating his dog.
The Santa Monica Police Department received information regarding a potential animal cruelty incident in the 1700 block of Ocean Avenue last week and Civilian Officers from the Santa Monica Police Department Animal Services Unit began an investigation.
Officers saw video of the event that was widely shared on social media but they were unable to locate the suspect or the dog.
Officers returned on September 5 and spoke to the suspect by phone. They determined he still had the dog in his possession.
“Based on the information received, Santa Monica Animal Control Officers turned their reports over to the Santa Monica Police Department Detectives who will present the case to the District Attorney’s Office for consideration of violation 597(a) of the California Penal Code, Malicious Mischief Against an Animal / Animal Cruelty,” said a statement from SMPD.
“Animal Services Officers continue to work with the individual and local authorities in the area where the animal is believed to now reside to have the dog evaluated by a veterinarian.”
The man in the video has been identified as Jeffrey Previte, a CEO of a consulting company.
Previte has said the concierge in his building recorded the video and attempted to extort money from him before releasing it.
Previte initially said he did nothing illegal during the incident but subsequently apologized for his behavior.
Previte also said he has taken a leave from his job, enrolled in an anger management program and has found a new home for the dog.
Previte's condominium was put up for sale for $2.495 million about a week after the incident and the listing remains active.
