A man was shot and killed on Sunday night during a family argument.
According to the Santa Monica Police Department, two brothers got into an argument at about 6:25 p.m. that resulted in one brother shooting and killing the second. The County Coroner's office has identified the dead man as Charles Mondev.
“Officers were called for a shooting on the 900 block of Lincoln,” said SMPD Lieutenant Candice Cobarrubias. “We found a person deceased and it appears it is family related. Two brothers got into an altercation with one shooting the other.”
She said the investigation is ongoing and more information will be released as it becomes available.
The murder was the second death investigation for local law enforcement and public safety workers over the weekend.
Police officers were also called to investigate a body found behind a Downtown parking structure on Saturday afternoon. Cobarrubias said initial investigation suggests the individual jumped from Parking Structure 2 (1235 Second Street).
"On Saturday, August 24, 2019 at approximately 8 a.m., officers responded to the area in front of Structure 2 for a possible suicide," she said. "A woman called the police after a body was found on the ground. Investigation determined the subject a male, homeless, approximately 35 years of age, jumped from the top of structure 2. There are no signs of foul play. The Los Angeles coroner took over the investigation."
Officers were also called to a grand theft case on Saturday.
According to Cobarrubias, Santa Monica Place Security employees were monitoring a radio call regarding a significant from the Louis Vuitton store. The mall employees contacted police officers that were patrolling the area and reported five individuals had entered the store, taken purses/wallets and fled towards the adjacent parking structure (Structure 7).
"Officers establish a perimeter around Structure 7 and prevented cars from leaving," said Cobarrubias. "Three suspects were stopped trying to leave and detained by the north (Broadway) exit. An additional vehicle was stopped on the east side (4th Street) exit and the occupants were detained."
She said all were identified as the theft suspects and arrested. Two adults and three juveniles were taken into custody but a third possible vehicle left the area before officers arrived. None of the stolen merchandise was recovered and the loss was estimated at $13,000.
