California hosts a championship meet in Clovis once a year where only the state’s top 40 swimmers are invited to attend. This esteemed competition is among the fastest high school meets in the nation with state and national records being set and the country’s top college recruits and future Olympians competing.
Two Crossroads swimmers earned a place in the esteemed meet. Georgia Young, after finishing second in her 200 free at CIF sectional finals (1:50.31), was seeded as the 16th fastest competitor in her event. Personal circumstances prevented her from competing, but her entry time would have brought her back for the meet’s finals; furthermore, the time on record has been submitted for All American consideration which is the top honor given to only the nation’s fastest 100 swimmers in any given event.
Katrina Mortenson qualified in both of her individual events, the 100 free and 50 free. A stunning prelims resulted in her qualifying for finals, where only the top 16 compete (8 in consolation finals and 8 in championship finals). She swam a solid 50 free, but was disappointed with her performance, having hoped to see a time drop despite earning her place as the state’s 15thfastest 50 freestyler and earning an All American consideration time.
She managed to shake off her disappointment and focus in on her 100 free, which took off a mere 30 minutes later. A stunning performance earned her a place among the nation’s fastest sprinters (49.98) as she blew away the All American automatic qualifying time and took home Crossroads’ first piece of hardware from the state meet with a fourth place finish (standing on the awards podium beneath two seniors who are committed to division one colleges and one junior who has been heavily recruited by outstanding swim schools as well).
To say that it was a strong post-season is an understatement as the swim program is boasting its first ever All-American in Katrina and has had the privilege of submitting consideration applications on behalf of Dash Glasberg, the school’s first competitive diver, and Georgia.
