Money talks, but in Santa Monica, developers' money howls!
On one of the last undeveloped beach lots, 1920 Ocean Front Walk, 83 residential units are being proposed, along with subterranean parking. Its 47 foot height will block the view of existent dwellings and make a mockery of traffic flow, especially in the beach season. Recent tsunami warnings by the city go unheeded for these beach dwellers and their underground garages.
We need to consider the welfare of the greater community when developing public spaces. I propose an arts center, We have an extensive colony of artists whose contributions do not get the attention they deserve. Bergamot Station received funding from the Endowment for the Arts. Santa Monica- Malibu schools will get $600,000 for art education, and Santa Monica Community College has a first rate arts program. Let's give these artists an opportunity to display their works to a large appreciative audience.
Many local families, especially with children, are overwhelmed by their numerous responsibilities. They do not have the opportunity to visit LACMA or Bergamot Station. But when going to the beach, visiting an art center is doable. Let's not forget the sizable number of international travelers who would be wowed by our local art scene.
