PCH — Detectives are requesting help from the public in identifying the driver of a vehicle that struck two pedestrians Friday night in Malibu, one a woman in her 50s and the other a 3-year-old toddler. The driver remains unidentified, and the victims were taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries.
The woman sustained a broken arm and the toddler sustained a fractured hip and numerous facial abrasions, Lt. Robert Wiard of the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station said in a press release.
The vehicle was described as a silver sport utility vehicle (SUV), according to Wiard. At 8:30 p.m. Friday night, it struck the two pedestrians at the 25800 block of Pacific Coast Highway, between Puerco Canyon and Corral Canyon Roads. The driver left the scene of the collision. The crash forced authorities to shut down the 1-mile stretch of PCH for nearly 90 minutes. The two pedestrians were later airlifted to UCLA Medical Center in Westwood for treatment.
A report by KABC Los Angeles quoted a sheriff's official who stated that the pedestrians were legally crossing PCH from the ocean side to the land side of the highway. The pedestrians appeared to have been struck by the SUV's side-view mirror, the official said.
