SM PIER
Happy Birthday
The Santa Monica Pier Restoration Corp. will join today with community members, tourists and city officials to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Santa Monica Pier.
The festivities will begin at 7 a.m. when a multi-denominational group of religious leaders will gather at the pier’s west end for a blessing and moment of reflection on the landmark’s rich history.
An official re-opening ceremony will be held later in the evening. The ceremony will include a ribbon cutting, a key note speech and “A Century of Memories,” a presentation featuring historical milestones by community members who have lived through each of the pier’s decades.
The celebration will include live musical performances by Dick Dale, a cappella group Vybration, the Big Bamboo Steel Band and the Los Angeles Brass Ensemble.
The evening will conclude with “the biggest firework show here in the last 20 years,” which can be viewed from the beach or the pier.
Pacific Park and the restaurants on the pier will stay open late in order to accommodate eventgoers.
