A local performer known for his unpermitted acts on the Santa Monica Pier brazenly stole a guitar from the Santa Monica Music Center today, caught on security cameras.

The theft occurred at 10:05am on Friday morning at the Santa Monica Music Center, owned by City Council member Lana Negrete. Surveillance video clearly shows the suspect walking into the store and walking out with a guitar while an employee was on the phone with a customer. The man, who recognizable to many pier regulars, confidently exited the store with the stolen instrument.

This incident highlights a troubling rise in retail thefts that are hurting small businesses in Santa Monica. Such crimes can lead to significant financial losses and increased security expenses for local shop owners. City Council member Lana Negrete stressed the need for change, stating, “This is partly why Mom and Pops stores are closing because we simply cannot sustain the cost of crime that goes unaccounted.”

The Santa Monica Police Department is investigating the theft and urges anyone with information about the suspect to come forward. If any readers of the Santa Monica Daily Press recognize this individual, they are encouraged to contact the Santa Monica Police Department immediately by email or at 310-395-9931.
