Venice Blvd was transformed into a car-free zone on April 21 in an event held by nonprofit CicLAvia and Metro Los Angeles Credit: Thomas Leffler

The typical sounds of roaring engines on Venice streets were replaced over the weekend with music and good conversation, with a biker’s paradise taking over the area.

On April 21, over five miles of Venice Blvd. were transformed into car-free open streets thanks to nonprofit organization CicLAvia, encouraging transportation like biking, skating and walking through Venice, Mar Vista and Palms. Working alongside Metro Los Angeles to clear the streets, the CicLAvia event had locals connecting with businesses and activity hubs along the route, including special pop-up booths, carnival games and musical performances.

The event was inspired by the weekly “ciclovía” in Bogotá, Columbia, and CicLAvia has been temporarily closing streets for the gatherings since 2010.

“It’s always a thrill to return to Venice Blvd, where the diversity of neighborhoods is celebrated on this [route] between National [Blvd] and the beach … we encourage participants to learn about and experience local gems along the way,” CicLAvia Executive Director Romel Pascual said. Pascual added that the protected bike lanes along Venice Blvd are available year-round, and hopes that people will use and revisit the area after participating in the car-free streets event.

CicLAvia events will continue throughout the year, with the next event in the Wilmington neighborhood of South Los Angeles on May 19. For more information, visit ciclavia.org
