California’s oppressive heat wave is predicted to ease this weekend and locals looking to emerge from their air-conditioned exile have options.
On Saturday residents can check out a pair of local car shows and on Sunday they can start the day with the annual 9/11 memorials at local fire stations, hit the Santa Monica Classic race later that morning and a free concert Sunday night
Santa Monica Classic Car Show
Pico Youth & Family Center (PYFC) will present the 2nd Annual Santa Monica Classic Car Show on the Santa Monica Pier on Saturday, Sept. 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All proceeds will benefit youth services and after-school programming for underserved youth in Santa Monica and Los Angeles County. Last year, more than 1,000 people attended this family-friendly event. The event is free for all spectators and guests on foot. This year, over 200 classic cars of various makes and models, some dating back to 1930’s will be on display in addition to live entertainment, food and vendors.
The Venice Car Show Fundraiser for the Venice Mexican American Traquero Monument
The Venice Car Show Fundraiser for the Venice Mexican American Traquero Monument will take place at Oakwood Park (767 California ave) in Venice on Sept. 10, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. They will also be celebrating Mexican Independence Day as Venice’s Annual “El Grito” Mexican Independence Day Celebration takes place during the week. This is a free family friendly Community Event and all proceeds will go towards the Venice Mexican American Traquero Monument. The Venice Mexican American Traquero Monument has been in the process since 2017. The project is moving forward and has strong support from the community with a projected completion date is in 2024.
SMFD 9/11 memorials
The Santa Monica Fire Department holds an annual memorial on September 11 each year. This year, each of the city’s fire stations will participate in a brief, individual ceremony outside each location at 6:45 a.m. Members of the public can visit any station to attend.
Santa Monica Classic Race
The annual foot race returns and while its too late to join, the finish line festivities are open to all. The Finish Festival is located on the Santa Monica Pier in the East Pier Parking lot and will feature activations from race partners, the McCourt Foundation & LA Road Runners. Along with fun activities, photo ops & entertainment from DJ Bella Foxx. Meet the LA Road Runners coach and pace team at the finish festival and learn about the upcoming training season for the Los Angeles Marathon that kicks off in late September.
Americana in the Park
McCabe’s Guitar Shop, in partnership with the City of Santa Monica, presents the second annual Americana in the Park concert series in Gandara Park, Sundays in September (4, 11, 18 & 25), from 4 – 7 p.m. The free series explores the arc of Americana music from its roots to modern forms, showcasing a diverse group of Southern California artists and styles. Each concert features a family-friendly headliner and opener. September 11: Comprised of teachers and staff from McCabe’s Guitar Shop, the McCabe’s Hootenanny Collective invites attendees to bring their instrument of choice and to join a sing-along free-for-all. Next up the bluegrass group AJ Lee and Blue Summit perform a blend of country, soul, swing, rock and jam musical influences.
