On July 22, 2022, at approximately 1:39 AM, Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) Officers responded to 2701 Wilshire Boulevard (Chase Bank) regarding an in-progress theft. The caller said a pickup truck was being used to try to take an ATM machine. Further, the caller said the pickup truck was still at the location however the subjects had fled the area.
When SMPD officers arrived they discovered a black Ford pickup truck still running with the doors open. It had a chain attached to the rear tow hitch which had pulled the bank ATM off a center island median and it was left lying face down in the middle of the parking lot. A computer check revealed the truck had been stolen from Santa Monica the day before.
A local resident told officers he heard what he described as a loud crashing noise from outside. He saw two subjects (no further description) exit both the driver and passenger side of the pickup truck and flee east through the alley and possibly get into another vehicle.
SMPD Officers towed the vehicle which was processed by our Forensics Unit. A report was taken, and SMPD Detectives are following up.
Anyone with any information about this crime or the suspects involved is encouraged to contact Detective Hector Tavera at 310-8946.
