For the first time since 2019, Summer Adventure – a fun and affordable summer enrichment program co-sponsored by the Santa Monica Education Foundation and Santa Monica-Malibu Council of PTAs – is running again this summer.

The program was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but both organizations are thrilled to open their doors again for local students to benefit from a well-rounded and educational summer experience.

The program is open to incoming kindergarten through ninth-grade students, and runs for five weeks from June 20 through July 22. This year’s elementary program will take place at Roosevelt Elementary School, and the middle school program is at Lincoln Middle School.

Elementary classes include STEM, sports, art, chess, video game design, theater, and more. A full-morning program for incoming kindergarteners is a popular option, supporting an easy transition to elementary school in the fall.

Middle school students will have a chance to sing, cook, produce their own songs, create art, make films, play field games, and so much more. Incoming sixth graders can take advantage of a “Middle School Masters” class, preparing them for their transition to middle school. The middle school program is offered on a weekly basis, for up to five weeks.

“We are especially proud of our transition classes that have helped countless students ease into their new school experience, whether they are starting kindergarten or sixth grade,” Alison Havel, Ed Foundation Board President, said.

Summer Adventure gives students the opportunity to enjoy an enriching summer camp experience in a relaxed school setting, where most classes are taught by SMMUSD teachers who are excited to share their passion in a specific area with students for a few weeks over the summer.

“We are proud to offer such a comprehensive summer enrichment program for our students,” said Gabrielle Cohen, President of the Santa Monica-Malibu Council of PTAs. “For the past 39 years, students have had a lot of fun, have made new friends, and have stayed engaged in learning during the summer. We’re so excited to be back in person again this year.”

With 16 PTA units, from preschool through high school, the Santa Monica-Malibu PTA Council is where all SMMUSD PTAs come together to share and exchange information, connect with the broader education community and build leadership skills as advocates for all children and families. SMMPTA’s mission is to support and speak on behalf of children and youth in the schools, in the community and before governmental bodies and other organizations that make decisions affecting children; to assist parents in developing the skills they need to raise and protect their children; and to encourage parent and public involvement in the public schools of this nation.

Contributions to the Santa Monica Education Foundation fund excellent programs at every Santa Monica public school.

Established in 1982 by a dedicated group of parents, community leaders, and local business owners, the Ed Foundation raises funds to enhance and supplement the curriculum of the Santa Monica schools. The Foundation’s mission is to engage the community to invest in a vibrant educational experience for all public-school students in Santa Monica.
