DTSM: Downtown Santa Monica Inc., hosted its second public safety town hall in partnership with the Santa Monica Police Department to help address resident and stakeholder concerns about the conditions Downtown and on the Promenade. SMPD personnel explained that while year on year crime is down Downtown, several factors such as Covid jail restrictions, staffing challenges, and the reclassification of certain felonies as misdemeanors limit officers’ ability to make arrests for petty theft and quality of life crimes related to homelessness. Councilwoman Lana Negrete said the Santa Monica community needs to be more outspoken in support of police officers if it wants to see more resources and enforcement from the department. The vigilance of SMPD officers, DTSM ambassadors and Allied Security personnel was praised for so far preventing any large smash and grab incidents Downtown.
