Housing is one of the main linchpins of racial inequality. The Fair Housing Act years ago was not just opposing discrimination in housing, but was also affirming needed changes in the already developed patterns of segregation. At a recent webinar sponsored by the So. CA Association of Non-Profit Housing, these ideas were brought forward, along with the statistic that the LA area was the 6th most segregated in the USA.  The coming Committee For Racial Justice (CRJ) workshop on Nov. 7th on zoom, which is entitled HOUSING JUSTICE = RACIAL JUSTICE : How to Fight Eviction and Discrimination, will address some of the issues surrounding these points. Also, the eviction moratoriums are coming to an end and the future for many may be uncertain.

The new CRJ housing team, which has been working on issues like Right to Return and problems with Section 8 vouchers not being accepted, is helping the steering committee put this workshop together.  There will be resource people to speak briefly from their own experience and knowledge base,  but there will be time for interactions with folks who are attending.

Bring your questions!  The focus will be on solutions.

The moderator will be Dr. Karen Gunn : Principal, Gunn Consulting Group – DEI, organizational development, training and facilitation; retired psychology professor – Santa Monica College; former chair – Santa Monica Bay Area Human Relations Council; health and mental health consultant and advocate.

Our resource people will be:

Caroline Torosis, a member of the Santa Monica Rent Control Board which is concerned with preserving rental housing and limiting grounds for eviction.  She currently works on LA Co. Supervisor Holly Mitchell’s team as Senior Deputy in Workforce Development & Economic Opportunity

Denise McGranahan, Attorney for Legal Aid Foundation of LA.  As an advocate for low income residents, she is active and focused on keeping people housed.-
