The SMDC Bylaws Committee has been working all year on a package of new bylaws reforms. We are presenting these changes to the general Club Membership at our meeting on Wednesday evening. (If you miss the meeting, as always, you’ll be able to watch a recording on YouTube the following day.) Finally, we will vote on whether to adopt these bylaw changes on November 17, at our final membership meeting of the year. The focus for our October meeting will be responding to the Climate Emergency.

It’s a refrain we’ve heard for decades now: “The latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report contains the most dire warnings yet for humanity.” In 2021, the IPCC report confirmed that human activity is linked to the extreme weather patterns we have been seeing recently around the world. We are on track to pass 1.5ºC of warming by 2040, and edging ever closer to irreversible tipping points. What are we going to do about it? What is our role as the Democratic Party to ensure a fossil fuel-free future? If we don’t take extreme, immediate actions, it may be too late for our planet. Guest Panelists will include:

Senator Henry Stern, member of the Senate Environmental Quality Committee; Igor Tregub, CDP; Environmental Caucus Chair; Lorraine Lundquist, Astrophysicist, Educator and former LA City Council candidate; Aura Vasquez, CDP; Executive Board Member AD50; Fatima Iqbal-Zubair, 2022 Assembly Candidate (AD64) and Vice Chair of CDP Progressive Caucus. We will also be joined by Chief of Police at LAX Cecil Rhambo, running as a Democrat for LA County Sheriff in 2022.
