Officers responded to the 1100 block of Alley 2 for reports of a dumpster fire. The contents inside the recycle bin were fully engulfed when officers arrived. Officers attempted to contain the fire with fire extinguishers but that had little effect. The embers from the fire had fallen into the trash can next to the recycle bin, starting a second fire. The bins were located to the rear of the Huntley Hotel. Due to the proximity of the fire to the hotel and the adjacent apartment building, both buildings were evacuated. There was surveillance cameras in the area that caught a description of a possible suspect. Arson investigators were able to obtain the footage and provide the suspect description to patrol officers. On December 23, 2019 at 3:30 p.m., the suspect was found in the area of 2nd and Wilshire and taken into custody. Calvin Jacob Herring, 43, homeless, was arrested for arson. Bail was set at $250,000.

  1. It must be a strange feeling for the locals having these weirdos wandering around the Alleyways in Santa Monica behind their apartment buildings.
