The Santa Monica Police Department is investigating a gang-related shooting in the 1550 lot of the Santa Monica Pier.

According to SMPD, officers received a call for a shooting at the south end of the 1550 parking lot at 9:58 p.m.

“Officers arrived on scene and found a male subject who had sustained a single gun shot wound to his lower leg. The victim was transported to a local hospital for a non-life threatening injury,” said SMPD Lieutenant Candice Cobarrubias in a statement. “Officers were able to ascertain the suspects to be group of male Hispanics, possibly gang members in their early 20’s. The suspects were last seen leaving the parking lot in a small sedan or smaller SUV. Officers canvassed the area and were unable to locate the suspects.”

She said the incident appears to be a spontaneous gang related encounter. Cobarrubias said both parties became involved in a verbal altercation on the pier, resulting in the shooting in the southern portion of the lot.

“Detectives are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspects or for any information that may be useful to the investigation,” she said.

  1. That’s it? No victim information? The pier may have been open, but it was empty except for the crickets. This gun shooting happened in time to be announced on local television.
