A day commemorating a Year of cultural celebration is coming to Santa Monica this weekend.

Santa Monica Place will celebrate the Year of the Pig with a Lunar New Year celebration Saturday, February 16 from 2 – 6 p.m.

The celebration, hosted by comedian Paul “PK” Kim, will feature performances and free activities ranging from a DJ, Chinese lion dances and Korean fan dances, folk music, New Year’s Wishing Trees and an appearance by K-pop group First Bite.

“Santa Monica Place is an international destination and the Lunar New Year holiday is meaningful to our local community and visitors,” Stephanie Eglin, Senior Manager of Marketing for Santa Monica Place said in a press release. “Bringing the cultural traditions of the holiday to life through activities and entertainment offers a great opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate.”

Bringing these cultural traditions to life through activities and entertainment was no easy task for Santa Monica Place workers. To provide Santa Monicans and visitors with authentic cultural performances for all, workers began outreach to some groups and performers as far as 6 months in advance.

A Santa Monica Place spokesperson said these measures help “to ensure we have the best entertainment secured for this special event”, an event which annually brings 45,000 visitors throughout the day to the shopping center.

“This upbeat and diverse lineup provides guests with a unique experience within a world-class shopping, dining, and entertainment destination,” the spokesperson added.

In addition to free cultural activities, Santa Monica Place’s Lunar New Year celebration invites patrons to hang a wish on the branches of two New Year’s Wishing Trees. The wishes are for a donation, with proceeds benefiting Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA) at UCLA. CSSA organizes activities for Chinese student groups and promoting traditional Chinese culture on the UCLA campus.

Santa Monica Place is located at 395 Santa Monica Place, Santa Monica, at Broadway and Third Street Promenade. The event will be held on level one in Center Plaza.
