A man was arrested and police were searching for a second male suspect following a shooting Thursday that wounded two people across the street from a Los Angeles charter school, authorities said.

The CHAMPS Charter High remained locked down more than an hour after gunfire erupted at a nearby Jack in the Box restaurant in the city’s Van Nuys neighborhood, Officer Ray Brown said.

Officers with their guns drawn combed the area about 15 miles (24 kilometers) northwest of downtown Los Angeles.

The victims were hospitalized in unknown condition, Brown said.

TV news footage showed two people sitting up on gurneys being wheeled into ambulances.

Brown said he did not have additional information about the suspect in custody.
