Samohi is currently neck-and-neck with Burbank High School in a soon-ending contest that would give the school $25,000 dollars towards their respective athletic programs.

Active Ride Shop, a California-based skateboard and skate apparel company, is responsible for the contest – ending September 3 — that would divide $100,000 among four high schools in the Southern California area. Top schools in their regions will win $25,000.

Active says they started the giveaway to give back to the often underfunded school communities they serve.

“We know schools are underfunded and it’s important to Active that we help our communities with funding for youth programs,” said Active President Jenner Heller in a press release. “Kids are passionate about the activities they participate in and we want to do our part in enabling them to live an Active lifestyle.”

To vote, all school supporters need to do is enter any Active Ride Shop and vote in store, no purchase necessary. According to a press release, some schools have already sent busloads of students into stores to vote. After a local media bump, Samohi is still in the running to win.

SMMUSD superintendent Dr. Ben Drati said rallying together as a community and ensuring a contest victory for Samohi would benefit the high school and its students alike.

“These funds will go a long way toward enhancing our Samohi athletic programs for boys and girls,” Drati said. “Samohi sports programs are important for many students to feel connected to school, while engaging in activities that are great for physical and mental health, while teaching teamwork, responsibility and cooperation. We encourage students, parents, staff and community members to visit the store to vote for Samohi.”

Santa Monica’s nearest Active Ride Shop is located in the 3rd Street Promenade.
