Two Santa Monica All-Star girls softball teams had successful journeys to the USA National Championship earlier this month.

The Santa Monica 14U Gold team won their District championship earlier this summer in Downey and then went on to win the State Championship in Lancaster in July. Earlier this month they continued their dominant run at the USA Western National Softball Tournament held in Salem, Oregon, winning second place of the 36 powerhouse teams in the tournament.

“The girls did not rest on their laurels after winning the state tournament, rededicating themselves to the hard work and commitment needed to compete on a national level,” said the 14U Gold team’s head coach Spencer Schneider. “With a target on their back as the California State Champion, the girls met virtually every challenge in route to the National Championship game, where they lost 4-2 to a very good travel team from Oregon. But even in the Championship game, they showed grit and determination, overcoming an early 2-run deficit to tie the game late before ultimately falling 4-2.”

In addition, the Santa Monica 12U Gold All-Star team finished third in their District championship and then placed high enough in the State tournament in Lancaster in July to advance to their USA Western National Championship held in Camarillo earlier this month, where they placed ninth of the 36 top teams in the region. “If I had to choose a word to describe this team, it would be determination,” said the 12U Gold team’s head coach Tony Temblador. “Throughout the year we were tested early with injuries. This group of amazing young ladies came together to fight through the adversity. I’m proud and honored to have shared so many amazing moments on and off the field with these girls and their families. Their determination and willingness to work hard and believe in the process has made each of them better softball players and more importantly, better individuals as they head into their next journey in life.”

Registration is open for girls ages 4 and up who want to play softball and become part of the Santa Monica Girls Softball community. For more information or to register, go to the Santa Monica Girls Fastpitch website at
