On July 12 at about 8:30 p.m., Santa Monica police officers responded to a report of a petty theft incident with a subject in custody at Rite Aid, located at 1331 Wilshire Blvd.

Officers met with a loss-prevention agent who told them he was monitoring the store via security cameras from the security office around 8:15 p.m.

The agent watched as the subject selected merchandise from the sales floor. The suspect exited the store without paying for the merchandise.

The subject walked out of the store and was stopped by the agent. The agent recovered the stolen items and led the subject back to the security office. The agent then detained the subject and called the police.

The suspect admitted to stealing the items and did not have any means to pay for them.

David Rey Vasquez was booked for shoplifting and violating probation. His bail was set at $10,000.
