The City Council appointed Sue Himmelrich, an attorney with the Western Center for Law and Poverty, to a single opening on the Planning Commission.

Himmelrich became active in Santa Monica over advocacy around the Village Trailer Park, a community that could be displaced by a mixed-use development being negotiated with City Hall.

Established in 1946, the Planning Commission’s mission is to promote the health, safety and general welfare by encouraging the most appropriate use of land; provide adequate open spaces for light and air; prevent undue concentrations of population; lessen congestion on streets; facilitate adequate provisions for community utilities and facilities such as transportation, water, sewage, schools, parks and other public requirements; and, designate, regulate and restrict the location and use of buildings, structures and land for residents, commerce, trade, industry and other purposes.

The commission’s importance has been elevated in recent years as scores of developers have inundated city planners with requests to build bigger projects than allowed under current zoning codes.

Commissioners make recommendations to the City Council.
