More than 4,000 runners are expected this Sunday for the seventh annual Santa Monica Classic.

The event, which includes both 5K and 10K races, will continue the tradition of raising awareness for the environmental nonprofit Heal the Bay, organizers said in a press release issued Monday.

Runners will race along the streets of Santa Monica on a point-to-point course that ends just steps away from the historic Santa Monica Pier.

Following the event, all participants can visit a finish line expo at the pier that promises to feature nutrition, fitness and health-related vendors, as well as an awards ceremony with eco-friendly recycled class trophies.

New this year is a $1,050 prize purse that will be split among the first three men and women to finish the 10K race.

Organizers plan to grow the prize purse in future years to attract top runners.

There’s still time to sign up. Registration and pre-race packet pick-up will be available on Saturday, May 19 at Sports Chalet at 11801 W. Olympic Blvd. from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or near the start line at 2600 Barnard Way beginning at 6 a.m. on race day.

“The Santa Monica Classic is a great course with fantastic views of the beach, so it’s a perfect way for runners to kick off their summer racing season,” said Nick Curl, chief operating officer for L.A. Marathon, LLC.
