Former Samohi standout Tyler Skaggs will begin the season at AA Mobile, the Arizona Diamondbacks announced this week.
Skaggs, who was originally selected by the Los Angeles Angels with the 40th pick in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft out of Santa Monica High School, was in major league camp for spring training, impressing Arizona brass.
His assignment comes as the Mobile Baybears and the big league club prepare to open their season later this week.
Skaggs has quickly risen through the ranks of Arizona’s pitching prospects, earning the organization’s minor league pitcher of the year award for 2011. He finished the season with a 9-6 combined record and a 2.96 earned run average. He was fourth among all minor leaguers with 198 strikeouts.
There has been talk in the Arizona media that Skaggs is a candidate for being called up for his Major League debut sometime later this season.
Skaggs came to the Diamondbacks as part of a trade that sent pitcher Dan Haren to the Angels in exchange for a group of minor leaguers.
