SAMOHI — Coming off one of the most successful seasons in recent memory, Samohi’s football team is toughening its schedule as it hopes to grow into a power in the sport.

Traditional heavy weights Mater Dei and Hart have been added to Santa Monica High School’s preseason schedule for 2012-13, Athletic Director Daniel Escalera said on Thursday.

Samohi has also added Redondo to next season’s schedule. Out are games against Centennial, Leuzinger and Anaheim Canyon.

The three new teams add to a schedule that includes traditional rival Palisades and another Southern California power in Valencia.

“We’re trying to be on par with other major programs,” Escalera said.

The 2011-12 season was highlighted by a 9-1 regular season record and a trip to the semifinals of the CIF-Southern Section Western Division playoffs, the first such appearance in a decade.

The aggressive scheduling is keeping in line with other programs at Samohi that traditionally take on some of the area’s top teams.

Both the girls’ and boys’ basketball teams play in the elite CIF-SS Division 1AA and regularly tangle with serious squads like Fairfax and Mater Dei.

Softball, too, has a history of beefing up its preseason opponents.

The preseason schedule may have changed, but the football teams’ Ocean League slate remains the same with games against Morningside, Beverly Hills, Culver City, Hawthorne and Inglewood.
