CITYWIDE — Even though Hollywood is the movie Mecca, this year’s Academy Awards will see Santa Monica as a town that loves independent film companies.

When the contenders for the 84th Academy Awards were announced, independent companies took 60 nominations in different feature categories.

Some of the companies — including GK Films, Lionsgate, Mandate Pictures, Myriad Pictures and Summit Entertainment — are based in Santa Monica.

“We’re very proud of our Santa Monica roots and we’d love to bring home Oscar gold for Santa Monica,” said a Lionsgate spokesperson.

Lionsgate, located at 2700 Colorado Ave., moved to Santa Monica from Marina del Rey in 2003.

The company produced and distributed “Warrior,” an action/drama about two brothers and their alcoholic father, played by Nick Nolte. Nolte was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the film.

Summit Films produced “A Better Life,” which follows a gardener in East L.A. as he struggles to keep his son away from gangs and immigration agents while trying to give his son the opportunities he never had. It stars Demián Bichir, who has been nominated in the Best Actor category.

Lionsgate announced it had purchased Summit Films on Jan. 13, 2012.

Independent production company GK Films has been on Second Street for the past six months, but has occupied other offices in Santa Monica for a few years.

The company produced “Hugo,” which is up for Best Picture. “Hugo” is also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, and its director, Martin Scorsese, is up Best Director.

“I am so incredibly proud of ‘Hugo’ and I will be forever grateful to the Academy for acknowledging a film that defies all genres,” Graham King, a partner at GK Films, said in an e-mail.

King also produced “Rango,” which was nominated for Best Animated Feature.

Myriad Pictures, an independent entertainment company that produces, finances and distributes films and television, is located on Main Street.

Myriad produced and distributed “Margin Call,” which received a nomination for best original screenplay.
