SAMOHI — Santa Monica shut out Inglewood, 3-0, Wednesday to begin the Ocean League soccer season with a win at home.

In victory, Samohi’s boys’ team improves to 5-1-3 overall and 1-0 in league.

The Vikings continue league play Friday on the road at rival Culver City. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

St. Monica opens league with win

On the strength of junior Briana Harris’ 38 points, the No. 9 St. Monica’s girls’ basketball team rallied Tuesday to top third-ranked Pasadena La Salle, 59-49, to open the Camino Real League season in the win column.

The win may improve St. Monica’s place in the next CIF-Southern Section Division 4A poll, which will be released on Monday.

Former Samohi standout Harris also grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out five assists in the home victory. Sophomore Katrina Balatico chipped in seven points and sunk two free throws late in the game to help secure the win.

The Mariners began the game slow, down 22-14 in the second quarter before rallying to end the half trailing, 27-26.

La Salle was able to take a 46-42 lead with five minutes remaining in the game, but St. Monica rattled off a 13-0 run to seize control of the game.

The victory improves St. Monica to 10-7 overall and 1-0 in league.

Next for the Mariners is a road game against league foe St. Joseph. The road game begins at 7 p.m.

UCLA recognizes Lemberger

Former Samohi star Thea Lemberger was named the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week on Jan. 2.

Lemberger’s highlight of the week came during a 26-point, four assist performance against Pac-12 rival California on Dec. 29 en route to a 60-55 victory.

The sophomore added eight points against Stanford a few nights later.

Lemberger has started all of the women’s basketball team’s games this season and is averaging 11.4 points along the way.

She is the team leader in assists and three-point field goals.

It was the first time she earned the honor.

While at Samohi, Lemberger led the Vikings to its first CIF-SS championship in the sport. In the process, she was named CIF-SS Division 1A player of the year as a senior.
