SAMOHI — The Santa Monica Vikings’ run to the semifinals of the CIF-Southern Section Division 3AA girls’ volleyball playoffs must have impressed people in high places.
A pair of Vikings were named to the All-CIF-SS Division 3AA team after finishing the season 21-6 overall and 8-0 in the Ocean League. Freshman setter Blossom Sato and senior outside hitter Sarah Krenik were placed on the first team, it was announced late last week.
“Isn’t that cool,” Head Coach Liane Sato said. “I’m pretty stoked to get two on.”
The honors didn’t stop on the CIF-SS level.
Vikings dominated the All-Ocean League team. Sato was named Most Valuable Player while Krenik was tabbed Most Outstanding Player.
Joining them on the Ocean League team are a total of seven teammates.
The first team includes: junior outside hitter Jordan Levy; senior libero Dana Ritchie; senior middle blocker Abby Southam; junior opposite hitter Avalon Lennon; and junior middle blocker Joslyn Hayes.
The second team featured junior middle blocker Greta Schmittdiel and junior libero Samantha Moore.
With four of the selections underclassmen, Coach Sato is looking to 2012 as another strong campaign for her Vikings.
“We have a nice group coming back on varsity,” she said. “They know what it takes to advance in the playoffs.”
Blossom Sato’s selection is somewhat surprising considering that the freshman has never played competitive volleyball. Her blood lines are strong, though, with mother Liane a former member of the U.S. Olympic team.
“It was really fun,” Coach Sato said of the pair’s first season together. “She really had the support of the other varsity players.”
