SM PIER — If you’re a college football fan in need of a fix now that the regular season is over, then the Santa Monica Convention & Visitors Bureau has just what you need — a Rose Bowl pep rally.

For the third year in a row teams to compete in the 98th Rose Bowl Game, scheduled for Jan. 2 at 1:30 p.m., will hold pep rallies in the parking lot north of the Santa Monica Pier.

The Oregon Ducks, Pac-12 champions and ranked No. 5 in the Bowl Championship Series poll, will square off against Big 10 champs the Wisconsin Badgers, ranked No. 10 in the BCS.

The bureau needs volunteers to help pull off the pep rallies, set for Dec. 31 (Wisconsin) and Jan. 1 (Oregon) from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Volunteers will be holding signs, passing out maps, cheering on teams and thanking the attendees for coming to Santa Monica.

Each volunteer will receive a T-shirt or sweatshirt, and a chance to win prizes that include tickets to Cirque du Soleil’s “Ovo” and iPod Nanos.

To sign up, e-mail Nika Jalali, programs assistance for the bureau, at Include availability and T-shirt size. Final details will follow.

Complimentary and open to the public, both events will feature specialties from local food vendors and varied entertainment.

Attendees can check for discounts, activities, hotel availability and suggestions.

“Santa Monica is excited to once again welcome two champion teams,” said Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom. “I believe that one thing all fans will agree on is that Santa Monica offers a broad range of world class amenities to enjoy before and after the parade and game.”

The bureau expects thousands of fans to attend the rallies and book rooms in local hotels.

“Our local businesses are excited about the influx of visitors from both of these teams,” said bureau President and CEO Misti Kerns. “We hope to again see fans enjoying all that our destination has to offer and encourage local fans to join in the fun and celebrate the New Year holidays where else, but right here at the beach!”

Santa Monica businesses can submit their offers for a free listing at and can contact the bureau for Rose Bowl window placards.

“Wisconsin fans had such an amazing experience at the Party at the Pier … last year, that we had to come back to Santa Monica again,” said Kevin Kleunder, assistant athletic director at University of Wisconsin.

Wisconsin lost 21-19 to the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs.

Oregon also held a pep rally in Santa Monica before the 2010 Rose Bowl game against the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Ducks lost 26-17.
