It is the season of giving and there are plenty of opportunities to help local public school kids while purchasing gifts for the holidays.

At Barnes & Noble this Sunday, shop and support the Samohi Orchestras.

From 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Barnes & Noble on the Third Street Promenade, just mention “Samohi Orchestras” and 20 percent of the purchase price will go to support the orchestra program at the high school, according to the Samohi PTSA.

The Samohi chamber group will be there from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. performing for shoppers.

From Dec. 11 to Dec. 16, shop online and 10 percent of the purchase will be donated to the orchestra. Go to www.barnesandnoble.com and at checkout, click on the box that says “Book Fair Purchase?” and enter the Samohi orchestra ID: 10591352.

Check out the talent Dec. 13 at the Samohi Orchestras’ Winter Concert at Barnum Hall, located on the Samohi campus, 601 Pico Blvd. For ticket information, go to www.samohiorchestras.org.

ZJ Boarding House is also getting into the act. They are offering shoppers a chance to help the school of their choice every Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. through Dec. 20.

The surf and skate shop will give 15 percent of every purchase to the local school of the shopper’s choice. Just say the name of the school and the cashier will make the donation.

“This is a great opportunity for holiday shopping for friends and family while supporting local schools at the same time,” read a statement posted on the Main Street establishment’s website, www.zjboardinghouse.com.

Some schools already involved include Samohi, John Muir Elementary, John Adams Middle School and Olympic High School. To add a school to the list, call (310) 392-5646.
