City Hall is asking for volunteers to help with the 2012 Homeless Count, scheduled for Jan. 25 from 10:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m.

The count is intended to better understand the scope of homelessness in the community. Past efforts have helped demonstrate a 19 percent reduction in homelessness from 2009 to 2011, and have been educational and community-building experiences that emphasized the importance of addressing homelessness in the city, officials said.

Spread the word and encourage friends, family members and colleagues to join the effort. Teams of two to three people will survey Santa Monica’s streets and note homeless individuals.
