DOWNTOWN — Santa Monica High School’s football team has entered the Western Division top 10 for the first time this season, the CIF-Southern Section announced this week.

The Vikings are ranked No. 9 after spending the past few weeks listed amongst the others, just outside the top 10.

The ranking comes on the heels of Samohi’s 28-15 win over Ocean League rival and defending champ Inglewood last week.

Also in the top 10 is fellow Ocean League member Culver City, which is currently ranked No. 7. Culver City has been ranked for most of the season.

Chaminade from the Mission League is again No. 1 on the poll.

Sheen helps Samohi raise funds

Actor Charlie Sheen will be the guest of honor at a fundraiser for Samohi’s baseball team, which is scheduled for Nov. 19.

The third annual celebrity poker tournament and auction will be held at Santa Monica’s Moose Lodge.

Sheen, who played for the Vikings during his days on campus, will be joined by former Major League Baseball player Kenny Lofton and current Pittsburgh Pirate Derrek Lee.

All proceeds will go to the Samohi team, which in recent years has upgraded its playing field with new turf and improved seating for fans with some of the money raised.
