SMC — A pair of Santa Monica College Corsairs swept the Southern California Football Association’s Pacific Conference players of the week awards, it was announced this week.

Quarterback Alfonso Medina was named offensive player of the week, while defensive back Rico Wright was honored on defense.

Medina, a freshman from Venice High School, garnered the award after completing 22 of 29 passes for 339 yards and four touchdowns during a victory over Santa Barbara last week.

Wright, also a freshman, was noted for a pair of interceptions that came during crucial points in the game against SBCC.

The Corsairs will face L.A. Southwest on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Pacifica Christian maintains hold on No. 1

The Pacifica Christian Seawolves’ girls’ volleyball team retained its No. 1 ranking in the latest CIF-Southern Section Division 4-A poll and promptly went out and defended the top spot by beating Hillcrest Christian on Thursday.

Next for the Seawolves is a road matchup against nearby Brentwood on Saturday. The game is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.

St. Monica hosts first league game

St. Monica’s football team and its 4-2 record will host St. Anthony Saturday at St. Bernard.

The game is the Santa Fe League opener for both teams. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
