UV photos reveal sun damage

Do you really know how much sun you’re getting? Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Ben Behnam is opening up his practice as a public service to provide free UV photos, which can uncover more sun damage than can be seen with the naked eye.

“I really hope that by holding these free sessions, I’m able to reach those who really need to hear this lifesaving message,” Behnam said.

Behnam will be on hand to offer free consultation concerning the UV photos, as well as answer any questions attendees might have about sun damage and skin health.

Samples of sunscreens that are designed to counteract sun damage will be given away.

The free sessions will be held every Friday in September after Labor Day between 9 a.m. and noon at Dermatology and Hair Restoration Specialists, 2825 Santa Monica Blvd., Suite 301-A.

SM senior to compete in ITU Championships

Seventy-year-old Santa Monica resident Peggy McDowell-Cramer will be competing in the International Triathlon Union World Championships in Beijing from Sept. 7 to Sept. 11.

The ITU World Championship Series brings the world’s athletes together to compete in a variety of contests.

All ITU World Championship games contain age group competitions that give amateurs the chance to race alongside professional athletes.

McDowell-Cramer will be competing because she won the female 70-74 age group national title on Aug. 20 at the 2011 USA Triathlon Age Group National Championship.

McDowell-Cramer will compete in both the ITU Aquathlon and the ITU Age Group Olympic Distance Triathlon events at the ITU World Championship Series.

She won age group medals in both events last year in Budapest, Hungary, where she took the silver medal in the Olympic-distance Triathlon, and the bronze in the Aquathlon.
