Before the single-use bag ban goes into effect Sept. 1, Santa Monica Public Library has already begun the process of going “green.”
Library officials announced that starting Monday, Aug. 29, for every book, CD or any other library item checked out each patron will receive a free reusable bag. This offer is available at all Santa Monica branches and is limited to one bag per person.
The Single-Use Carryout Bag Ordinance prohibits the sale of single-use carryout bags by retail establishments as well as the free distribution of paper bags by all grocery stores, convenience stores, mini-marts, liquor stores and pharmacies.
According to Santa Monica’s Office of Sustainability and the Environment website, the ordinance was passed with the purpose of reducing the negative environmental impacts of single-use bags, such as non-biodegradable litter and the danger they pose to marine and avian life. The hope is to move Santa Monica in the reusable bag direction.
