As people get ready to celebrate America’s birthday on Monday, the Santa Monica Fire Department is reminding the public that all types of fireworks are illegal in the city by the sea.
That includes so-called “safe and sane” fireworks, which may not be used in Santa Monica, even if they are legal in the city they were purchased, fire officials said Thursday.
Each year fireworks cause permanent scarring, loss of vision, and even dismemberment. Keeping the public safe from firework-related injuries and death is the fire department’s top priority, said Suzanne Post, fire safety coordinator for the SMFD.
Public fireworks displays by trained professionals are the smartest and safest alternative for everyone to celebrate and enjoy the July 4 celebration, Post said.
