SANTA MONICA BLVD — The conflict between bicyclists and those who drive Santa Monica’s streets has claimed an accomplished character actor.

Donald Sutherland, who played Hawkeye Pierce in the movie“MASH”, was driving out of an alley in the 1200 block of Santa Monica Boulevard around 2:45 p.m. Thursday when his SUV collided with a cyclist who was riding on the sidewalk, SMPD Sgt. Richard Lewis said.

The cyclist suffered pain to her right hand and an abrasion to her left leg, Lewis said. She was treated at the scene.

No one was cited.

Sutherland was one of two people to dial 911.

An investigation is ongoing and both parties involved could receive citations because both broke the law, Lewis said.

Sutherland cross into the sidewalk, most likely to get a better view before pulling out onto Santa Monica Boulevard, and the cyclist was riding on the sidewalk.

“You should stop before going across the sidewalk and the bicyclist shouldn’t have been riding on the sidewalk,” Lewis said.

A traffic investigator will determine who was at fault.

Alcohol was not a factor, Lewis said.

Bicycle activists have been putting pressure on city officials to make it safer for them while riding, while drivers have been bashing bicyclists for failing to abide by the rules of the road.

Earlier this month a suspected drunk driver plowed into a group of cyclists near a hilltop park in Culver City, sending 11 to hospitals.
