Popular annual running event the Santa Monica 5000 has recently announced a new partnership with the Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation that names the nonprofit the race’s sole beneficiary.

The race, scheduled for Oct. 2, will raise money for local school fitness and athletic programs facing budget issues. The race will also provide funding for the Ed Foundation’s newly established athletic endowment.

“We are very grateful to the organizers of the Santa Monica 5000 for addressing the need to support school athletics,” said Ed Foundation’s Executive Director Linda Greenberg. “Students are already raising money for uniforms and equipment through non-athletic events. By teaming up with the Santa Monica 5000, we encourage fitness and raise money at the same time. This is a total win-win.”

The Santa Monica 5000 is organized by Brennan and Michelle Lindner, the principals in Generic Events and the parents of two young children.

“We met at a triathlon and we know how important fitness is to the physical and mental health of a family,” said Brennan Lindner.

The Santa Monica 5000 includes 5K/10K run/walks, a 2.7 Dash for Kids and Stroller Stride for parents pushing newborns and toddlers in strollers. All events take place on a scenic course that starts next to the beach at Ocean Park Boulevard and ends at the Santa Monica Pier with a free celebration featuring live music, fitness demos and sampling of sponsor products.
