The Public Technology Institute and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation have recently recognized City Hall as a leader in the application of Web 2.0 technologies and social media tools such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Santa Monica is one of 17 city, county and state governments nationwide to achieve the recognition based on results in citizen engagement, government accountability and operational efficiencies.

Web 2.0 is a category of new Internet tools and technologies created around the idea that the people who consume media, access the Internet, and use the web shouldn’t passively absorb what’s available; rather, they should be active contributors, helping customize media and technology for their own purposes, as well as those of their communities.

City Hall employs over 90 social media tools and plans to offer more mobile web sites and applications in the future.
