A team of four Santa Monica High School students took third at the National Ocean Science Bowl competition in Galveston, Tex. over the weekend.
Mari LeGagnoux, Madeleine Youngs, Zach Gold and Dana Ritchie beat out 21 other teams in the buzzer battle which put them up against other teens that specialize in a very specific subset of science knowledge: marine science.
As a prize, all four will get a trip to Florida to work with a professor from the University of Miami to check out the Everglades, tag sharks and go snorkeling.
The competition was a nailbiter, Gold said, with the team going to two rounds of double elimination.
“I think we played really well,” Gold said. “It was a great competition, a great learning experience and a lot of fun.”
